Bratislava,
the capital of the Slovak Republic lies on both banks of the Danube
river and on the parts of the Malé Karpaty mountains. It is the biggest
and the most important town in Slovakia with rich history. The area
of the town was already settled 4,000 years B.C. The Celts produced
silver coins here - biateky and Romans had their fortifications here.
In the past Bratislava was developing the most at the begining of the
16-th century when it was announced to be the capital city of the Hungarian
Empire. 18 Hungarian monarchs were crowned in the Dóm svätého Martina
here from 1563 to 1830. Turks destroyed the surroundings and the whole
south-west parts but they never got into the city. In 1782 Bratislava
had more than 33,000 inhabitants and became the second largest city
in the Hungarian Empire. A historical core, the castle and the
area under the castle create a nature preserve with more than 359 preserved
objects. There is the Devínsky hrad castle above the junction of the
rivers - Morava and Danube, on a steep cliff, mentioned for the first
time as an important Slavonic fortification Dowina in 864.
