Šariš

A plan for a route with a daily programme.
A territory rich in historical monuments in the northern part of Eastern Slovakia. It was named after the Šariš castle. This territory was then separated from a big district Novum Castrum ( Nový hrad, Ujvár ). Its borders were set in the 14-th century and with the small changes stayed the same till the extinction of the districts in 1922. The northern part of Šariš started to be settled more intensively, only in the 13-th century by the Slovak inhabitants. In the 15-th and the 16-th century pastoral Ukranian population started to settle here according to the "Valašské" right. The towns became trade and craft centers of Šariš. In the middle of the 14-th century Prešov, Sabinov and Ve¾ký Šariš got town's character, at the beginning of the 14-th century Bardejov as well. The importance of the towns Bardejov and Prešov grew with the development of the trade with Haliè, Malopo¾sko and Ukrajina and the crafts. The inhabitants were mainly farmers and they did cattle breeding for living. There was the only one factory in this area for a long time - a steam mill in Ve¾ký Šariš. An important feature of the capitalist development was a mass emigration, mainly from the northern poor parts. The most important centres of this region are the towns Prešov and Bardejov. This region is marginally meeting the National Park Poloniny. There are several rare wooden Othodox and Greek-Catholic chapels in the northern part. Near Bardejov, a town with the most preserved historical centre with the best fortifications, 17 wells of cold mineral water stimulated the origin of well known baths where the diseases of digestive tract are cured. A unique complex of objects for mining and cooking salt from the 17-th century is preserved in Solivar, one district of Prešov. Dubnícke opaline mines are very interesting curiosities of this region, for centuries they were the only mines of expensive opal in the world.
